| Further Info | We are pleased to announce the launch of Sheffield Regional Branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society on 27th March 2012 at 7.00PM, in the new building of Knowledge Transfer Centre at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre with Boeing, The University of Sheffield. The Inaugural Lecture will be given by John Roberts, Chief Engineer of A380, Airbus, and it will be preceded by a tour of the facility starting at 6PM. In 1969 Boeing changed the face of air travel. The 747 made cheap air travel a possibility for the ordinary man in the street. Such was the scale and impact of the 747 it made the world a much smaller place. It was 36 years later that a comparable aircraft was born – on the 27th January 2005 the Airbus A380 took to the sky. In this lecture John Roberts will describe the introduction into service of the world’s largest passenger aircraft, the A380. He will describe the challenges of ensuring operational reliability and to maintain the highest levels of engineering performance John Roberts holds an Honors degree in Mechanical Engineering from Brunel University and he has spent his career working in the aviation. John was the chief systems engineer on the Airbus A330/340. He then worked for Messier Dowty as Vice president of Engineering where he was responsible for the engineering of the landing gear product. Returning to Airbus in 2009, he was appointed Chief Engineer for the Airbus A380 Aircraft – responsible for the wing landing gear systems and fuel systems. John is a Chartered Engineer, Member of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and well noted for his recent appearance on 'How to make an aircraft wing' shown on the BBC last year. |
